South Asian Glacier Research Consortium proposed
Islamabad (February 6, 2025) – Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, urged for the formation of a South Asian Glacier Research Consortium and called for an enhanced SAARC environmental action plan to tackle the growing threats posed by glacial melt across the region. Speaking at the Breath Pakistan conference, Ms. Romina highlighted the urgency of addressing the escalating challenges caused by global warming, particularly the risks of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Pakistan, home to over 7,000 glaciers, is witnessing alarming rates of glacial melt, which not only jeopardizes local communities but also threatens the water security of millions dependent on the Indus River. Ms. Romina stressed that these rapid changes endanger livelihoods and escalate disaster risks across South Asia. Outlining Pakistan’s efforts, Ms. Romina spoke of the Glacier Protection Initiative under the national climate change policy and the GLOF-II Project, which, supported by the Green Climate Fund and UNDP, implements community-based early warning systems in northern Pakistan. Advocating for a regional approach, Ms. Romina called for greater transboundary water diplomacy and the strengthening of shared research efforts to combat the impacts of glacial melt. She emphasized the need for a South Asian Glacier Research Consortium to foster scientific collaboration, and for regional climate financing to support glacial adaptation strategies. "Together, we can build resilience, safeguard our glaciers, and secure the water resources vital to South Asia’s future," she concluded.
