Need for ‘unified voice’ to highlight climate risks of vulnerable counties highlighted

Islamabad (February 03, 2025) – Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, has called for bold economic and financial resilience strategies to promote climate prosperity in vulnerable nations.

During a meeting with the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) delegation, led by Sara Jane Ahmed, Managing Director of the Vulnerable Twenty (V20) group, Ms. Alam emphasised the need for ambitious climate action to attract the necessary investments and resources to achieve climate and development goals.

Spelling out significant myriad risks faced by climate-vulnerable countries, Ms. Alam pointed to the lack of a unified voice in global negotiations, often overshadowed by wealthier nations, which is direly needed to highlight the climate risks in the vulnerable countries.

“The reality for climate-vulnerable nations is harsh,” said Ms. Alam. “These countries are not only grappling with the immediate impacts of climate change but also with an ongoing struggle for recognition and resources in global forums. We must push for inclusive strategies that ensure financial resilience and attract the resources needed for climate action.”

The CVF delegation visited the Ministry of Climate Change to engage in consultations for developing Pakistan's Climate Prosperity Plan—an essential low-carbon, long-term national investment strategy. Ms. Alam reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional collaboration, emphasizing the importance of enabling CVF members to make informed decisions and mobilize resources effectively.

The Climate Vulnerable Forum, an international coalition of 70 nations representing 1.75 billion people, advocates for the interests of nations most affected by climate change. Ms. Alam underscored Pakistan's active role in driving regional climate resilience and strengthening efforts for global climate justice.

The meeting was attended by Additional Secretaries Zulfiqar Younus and Hamad Shamimi, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Climate Change.
