Pakistan Seeks to Tap China’s $7 Trillion Green Finance Model
ISLAMABAD - (May 4, 2026) Pakistan signalled a stronger push towards green financing and climate entrepreneurship as Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik held high-level talks with Ma Jun, President of the Institute of Finance and Sustainability, to explore collaboration on scalable climate solutions. During the meeting held in the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Mr. Ma Jun briefed the minister on China’s Green Accelerator Programme, launched in 2016 with a consolidated framework of 35 policy recommendations. He noted that China has since built the world’s largest green financing ecosystem, estimated at around $7 trillion, positioning itself at the forefront of global climate investment. Highlighting China’s industrial capacity, Mr. Ma Jun said the country produces nearly 70 per cent of the world’s wind and solar energy equipment and close to 60 per cent of global electric vehicles, underscoring its dominance in clean technology supply chains. He explained that the Green Accelerator model focuses on developing “bankable” climate projects by integrating finance, technology, carbon markets and advanced project design - an approach aimed at delivering scalable and commercially viable environmental solutions. The two sides exchanged views on replicating successful green innovations across regions. Examples discussed included biochar production from agricultural waste in Bangladesh, precision irrigation systems deployed in China and Uzbekistan, and desert agriculture initiatives in Abu Dhabi. The discussion emphasised adapting such models to Pakistan’s local conditions while ensuring financial sustainability. Dr. Malik outlined Pakistan’s upcoming “Green Fields” initiative, designed to connect young entrepreneurs working on climate-focused ventures with domestic and international investors. The programme, however, is currently under process and has not yet been formally launched. It aims to stimulate green entrepreneurship and position youth as key drivers of sustainable economic growth. The minister praised China’s leadership in green finance and clean technology, stressing that international partnerships would be critical for Pakistan to accelerate its transition towards a climate-resilient and sustainable economy. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s intent to leverage global best practices to scale up practical, locally relevant climate solutions amid growing environmental challenges.
